A Melbourne company has been awarded the tender to create a geological ‘skeleton’ of the Gippsland Basin that can be fleshed out to become a sophisticated 3D model and used by companies to explore for valuable resources.

When 3D-GEO completes such a project the intellectual property of the products is owned by the client. The regional surfaces match the data in time and depth; in contrast to datasets that exclude seismic data. 3D-GEO supplies all projects with interpretation and extrapolated products. Most groups within the geotechnical arena; from petroleum, geothermal, hydrology, energy resources and earth monitoring would be interested in various outputs related to 3D-GEO workflows and products.

Onshore and offshore exploration of the vast Otway Basin for oil, gas and geothermal energy will be made easier thanks to a Brumby Government investment in a major 3D study of the region.

A framework sequence stratigraphic study of the onshore and offshore eastern Otway basin has been conducted as part of the 3D Victoria Initiative, in an attempt to resolve the complex stratigraphy and contradictions and confusions present in the published literature. The results are promising at the present pilot scale, but the full details of the chronostratigraphy have not yet been finalised.
